What is Link Popularity? Link popularity is a general representation of the total number of web-pages which link to a website or individual web-page. Most of the major search engines support the "link:" operator, which should be proceeded by the URL you wish to discover the link popularity for. Why is link popularity so important?. Link popularity is important because it is a major factor used by search engines in influencing a site or page's ranking in search results. In general, pages with more inbound-links will be ranked higher than similar pages with less. Nevertheless, many other factors are considered such as anchor text- the actual wording of the link. What does this Link Popularity Tool do? This tool will query all the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, All The Web, and AltaVista), using the 'link:' operator with the URL you have picked, It will then show you the total link-count for each. You will see that the number of links varies greatly from Search Engine to Search Engine; this is because the figures shown represent the number of inbound-links that are known to that search engine (which will vary based on the size of their database). Most of the search engines (Google especially) also apply various filters against the the inbound-links, therefore, some inbound-links may not be counted toward the total.
